Wounds are injuries to the skin and other soft tissues caused by trauma, a surgical incision or prolonged pressure. The capacity of a wound to heal depends in part on its depth, as well as on the overall health of the individual.
Individuals with active diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) are at risk for amputation. Team members with the knowledge and skills to manage DFUs are required as part of the integrated team and may include Physicians, Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Enterostomal Therapists (ETs), Chiropodists or Physiotherapists with specialized training in diabetic foot ulcer management. Advanced interventions provided by these clinicians may include, but is not limited to, local wound care including sharp debridement and management of infection, offloading of high pressure areas, assessment of lower-extremity vascular status, and use of adjunctive therapies for wound healing.
